Sounds like the con was fun. Wish I could have been there, but the cost of travel and accomodation - sigh.
Having an external hard drive to handle backups is great. But if you want to really cover yourself, you may want to have another couple of backup options as well:
Mozy (http://mozy.com/ ) is an online backup service for Mac and Windows and 2GB of backup is free.
If you have more than one computer, Microsoft Foldershare (https://www.foldershare.com ) is a great way to synchronise files between them. It's really fast - changes will be transferred as soon as you save, you can sync as many computers as you want and it works on the Mac as well. I move between several different PCs and a Mac and I no longer need to care about which one has my documents. I just start typing.

I'd like to see some sort of rap battle between the Conchords and The Mighty Boosh....
